What is Psychological testing?
Psychological testing is a process used to clarify one’s presenting concerns in a holistic manner and provide tailored treatment recommendations. We embrace that each person has their own experiences in life that are unique and distinctive to them. Hence, as we endure life’s ups and downs we may experience “stuckness” or uncertainty about why or how we are operating on a daily basis. Thus, psychological testing utilizes a variety of standardized measures to accurately gain a snapshot of how a person is functioning across various domains of life including: academics, career, family, relationships, homelife, and self-care etc.,.
The type of measures typically used include paper-pen questionnaires, online surveys, and aptitude and/or achievement tests to assess academic/work performance, attention, memory, and social and emotional functioning. Also, IQ and cognitive measures are used to understand how we learn and take in information. Therefore, identifying areas of growth and strength is a crucial aspect of the testing process to continue to build and improve one's abilities. Additional information is typically requested from partners, parents, teachers, medical providers, close friends, etc. so the testing clinician can gain an all-inclusive and comprehensive understanding of the client’s challenges and functioning in various settings.
Based on the individual’s present concerns and needs, the testing clinician will develop a tailored battery of measures to accurately assess their current level of functioning. Thus, based on the results of the testing process, specific recommendations will be made to guide them to their fullest potential. The recommendations may include suggestions for the individual, family, school, and/or work as well.
